She sat at the edge of the bench, arms folded, head down, voice low but direct. “We have too much talent to be this average.” It wasn’t the first time her coach had heard the grumbling. And on the surface, she wasn’t wrong. The team had the raw ability to be great. But instead of lifting the group, her words carried weight that dragged the environment down. The coach let the silence sit in that moment. Driving home, that phrase played on repeat in his mind. "We have too much talent to be this average..." The next day, he saw the young lady and pulled her aside in between classes. He said, "I heard what you said yesterday, and you're not wrong, but here's something to think about. You keep looking out there… when maybe it’s time to look in the mirror. What if the teammate you’re searching for is the one you’re meant to become?” The girl was stunned, left speechless by a frame she knew to be true, but didn't want to admit... We all want to be part of a great team. But too often, we chase that greatness by evaluating everyone else — their effort, their talent, their leadership — instead of asking if we are the kind of teammate that elite teams are built around. This is where the PACT begins. It’s not just a framework. It’s a personal promise. A declaration that before we demand more from others, we will first demand more from ourselves, and in turn, gives us the leadership capabilities to command more from those on our team. ✅ Purpose drives passion and performance. It asks: Why do I show up? Great teammates bring energy because they are anchored to something bigger than themselves. ✅ Alignment activates connection and decisiveness. Are your actions pulling in the same direction as the team’s vision? True alignment means you don’t just fit in or that you always agree, but that — you move forward together. ✅ Communication builds trust and collaboration. High-performing teams don’t read minds — they ask, listen, and speak with courage. Great teammates clarify, not assume. ✅ Tenacity creates accountability and resiliency. Are you someone who brings focus and fight every day? When pressure rises, great teammates lean in, they don't tap out. Cool part is, I've been teaching this concept for years to businesses, leaders, schools, students and of course college teams and student-athletes. I've created a Free PDF that can help you as you try and incorporate this into your organization. Click this link to download the PDF. If you want to be on a team that wins, don’t just look for one. Become the kind of teammate that a winning team would fight to keep. That’s the PACT. Strive for Excellence. RB WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW THE PACT CAN HELP YOUR TEAM ACHIEVE GREATER RESULTS?
